Mindfulness is establishing a firm presence in the workplace as an increasing number of organisations recognise the benefits of introducing Mindfulness practices and skills to their workforces. Companies such as Apple, Yahoo, Google, AXA PPP Healthcare and Transport for London have been at the leading edge of implementing Mindfulness programmes.
There is a strong body of clinically-evidenced data underpinning the value to both employer and employee. We have found some of the benefits to include:
Stress and anxiety reduction which results, in particular, in less absenteeism.
A happier workplace leading to greater employee retention.
Greater resilience and ability to perform effectively under pressure and in deadline situations.
Clearer thinking and communication.
Improved prioritisation skills.
Increased stability and resourcefulness during periods of change and upheaval.
Promoting employee confidence leading to an enhanced willingness to take on new responsibilities.
The Mindfulness All-Party Parliamentary Group reported in “Mindful Nation UK” (December 2014) that “high levels of stress in many workplaces are contributing to mental health problems”.
Within this broad understanding lies significant and increasing levels of staff absenteeism, staff burn-out, lack of productivity, and poor decision making. At MindfulnessUK we hear regular evidence of the disruption, disharmony and difficulties that these problems cause for employers.
A key recommendation of “Mindful Nation UK” was that public sector employers take the lead in pioneering good practice towards their employees and set up Mindfulness pilot projects which can be evaluated as part of a response to stress-related problems in the workplace.
We believe that Mindfulness has the potential to be equally beneficial to stress and stress-related problems in the private sector.
We have already offered pilot projects, most recently within a South West County Council. The results have been very positive with 73% of the Group measuring in the highest band of mental wellbeing at the conclusion of the programme as opposed to only 9% at commencement.
